PREVENTION OF SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST IN YOUTH

ABOUT LIVING FOR ZACHARY Living for Zachary’s mission is to raise awareness and prevent sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in youth. The organization was founded in honor of Zachary Schrah, who was only 16 years old when he collapsed without warning during a high school football practice in Plano on April 2, 2009. After Zachary’s death, his mother Karen founded Living for Zachary, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, in June of 2009. Since its inception, Living for Zachary has impacted thousands of families and children across Texas through youth heart screenings, AED donations, CPR/AED certification classes, scholarships, and awareness events.

LIVING FOR ZACHARY HEART SCREENINGS: The “Living for Zachary Heart Screening” is a special screening program for youth ages 12-22 that can help detect heart abnormalities that may lead to Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Living for Zachary partners with Frontera Strategies to provide these screenings.

Living for Zachary is coordinating student heart screenings performed by Frontera. The non-invasive screening package includes:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Limited 2-D Echocardiogram
  • Blood pressure screening
  • SCA Risk History Questionnaire (AHA recommended)
  • Screening review and interpretation by a board-certified cardiologist

Living for Zachary is able to provide free youth heart screenings to the public due to the generosity of our donors. Appointments are booked on a first-come, first-serve basis and fill quickly.
If you do NOT attend the appointment for which you are booked or cancel on the day of the event, you will be charged with a $25 no-show/late cancellation fee.

To cancel your appointment prior to the event date, please email heartscreenings@livingforzachary.org or call 972-478-5959 so your appointment can be re-booked with a new patient.

A parent or guardian must be present for youth under 18 years of age during the Living for Zachary Heart Screening.

Thank you for your help in ensuring more youth can be screened through Living for Zachary!

Contact your pediatrician immediately if your child is currently experiencing Sudden Cardiac Arrest symptoms.

A Living for Zachary Heart Screening is not a substitute for a thorough exam and consultation with a physician and does not provide clearance for participation in athletics. While the screening seeks to detect conditions that may lead to SCA, it does not guarantee all risks of SCA will be detected.

The Living for Zachary Heart Screening does not detect, predict risk, or diagnose any heart abnormalities related to COVID-19 or the COVID-19 vaccine. Contact your child’s pediatrician if you have questions or concerns related to COVID-19.
